
Opening the batting is a tough gig. Desmond Haynes once told me in the Lord's dressing room that opening the batting was the hardest job inthe world. With a booming voice and a broad smile he proclaimed that being an opening batsman was a much tougher assignment than being the Prime Minister of England.
Back then I wasn't even an opening batsman but he said it with such passion and conviction that I was compelled to believe him. Now, having spent the last half of my career taking the first ball of the innings, I can understand where West Indies' great opener was coming from. It would be fair to say that he may have been a bit over the top in his assessment but I will say I have respect aplenty for anyone who takes the job of opening the innings for their team and then does it successfully.
